Formula 1 is heading to the Sunshine State for the next round of the season, the second edition of the Miami Grand Prix at an amazing temporary street track. Ahead of the race, let’s take a look at the key numbers to get you up to speed.
The Miami International Autodrome was the 77th venue to hold a Grand Prix and was only new track on the previous Formula 1 calendar. This year it is the first of three races in the United States, alongside Austin and Las Vegas which is joining the party.
There are 19 turns on the 5.41km track that sweeps around the impressive Hard Rock Stadium, which is the home to the Miami Dolphins. Of those, two give drivers the opportunity of attempting overtaking moves. The first is left-hander Turn 11, while the second is Turn 17, a tighter left-hander at the end of the circuit’s longer straight.
A staggering 24,000 tones of asphalt has been laid to finalize the track. A big proportion of the track surface in Miami is locally-sourced limestone, that has a high silica content. As a result it has become more hard-wearing and abrasive so it has been fused together with a granite mix composition.
As on each track, safety is essential. There are 37,000 feet of concrete barriers which are located on the 19-corner race track, with 2,870 Geobrugg blocks also added.
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc took pole position for the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, securing the 12th pole position of his Formula 1 career at that moment. With that pole Charles equalled Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard for 33rd in the all-time list of most Formula 1 poles. At the same time, the Monegasque driver took Scuderia Ferrari’s 14th pole position in the United States – the Maranello team’s first in the country since Michael Schumacher took pole at Indianapolis for the 2006 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. He became the 36th different driver to take pole position for a World Championship Grand Prix in the US.
