The first two practice sessions of the Singapore Grand Prix once again showed an inconsistent Ferrari. However, according to former Formula 1 driver Anthony Davidson, a small detail in Lewis Hamilton’s comments may have revealed the true potential of both the British driver and Ferrari heading into the weekend.
Drivers are about to hit the track for the final practice session before qualifying, scheduled for 3 PM Central European Time. What can be expected from Ferrari? The Maranello team looked very competitive in the opening practice session, but in FP2 they could do no better than ninth and tenth place. Yet Davidson believes that a subtle hint in Hamilton’s post-session remarks might have revealed more about Ferrari’s true performance level at Marina Bay than the timesheets suggest.
The challenging conditions of Marina Bay
The Marina Bay street circuit is one of the most demanding tracks on the Formula 1 calendar due to its high temperatures and extreme humidity. For this reason, the FIA has made the use of cooling kits mandatory. The excessive heat not only affects the drivers and the teams but also plays a significant role in race strategy, as tyre degradation and overall performance are heavily influenced by temperature management.
Ferrari’s potential
According to Anthony Davidson, Lewis Hamilton’s positive attitude on Friday could be an important clue not to overlook. The former F1 driver explained: “I can read a lot from his body language, and as we know, he always shows his emotions very clearly, whether they’re good or bad. I’m surprised he seems so upbeat. I take that as a very encouraging sign for Ferrari and what we can expect tomorrow and on Sunday, because if he feels comfortable in the car — being such an instinctive and intuitive driver — it means he already senses that the car beneath him is doing something right.”
Davidson went on to add: “This is the kind of car he’s always wanted to have at this circuit. For him, it’s a step forward, and he definitely feels more at ease. Now he just needs a bit of luck on his side throughout the weekend.”
