A rather curious moment was caught on camera by a fan during a not-so-exciting Singapore Grand Prix. In modern Formula 1, such episodes are becoming increasingly common. With the current technical regulations reaching their end and teams now extremely close in terms of performance, many races lack overtakes and real plot twists. Between a DRS system that has become almost too decisive and power units that are now extremely reliable, it is not surprising that during some Grands Prix, attention can drift elsewhere — even to other sports.
In the pit lane, mechanics watch football matches
This is exactly what happened during the Singapore GP, won by George Russell, when a fan filmed several mechanics watching a football match on a mobile phone. The scene took place just a few meters away from where their driver was battling for the race victory, making the situation even more ironic.
The episode, while amusing and somewhat bizarre, highlights a deeper issue: Formula 1 may once again be in need of changes that can make races more unpredictable and engaging for fans. One potential solution currently being discussed is the introduction of a mandatory number of pit stops per race. This idea would prevent teams from making identical strategic choices and staging simultaneous stops, which often lead to predictable outcomes. The proposal has been on the table for some time, and Pirelli — together with the teams and Formula 1 management — is evaluating its feasibility to bring back more variety and excitement to future races.
