Formula 1 gas confirmed it is set to hold talks with Netflix regarding the edits of hit show ‘Drive to Survive’ after several drivers and many fans complained about the fact that some storylines are faked, or made to seem much more dramatic than they really are, for entertainment purposes.
Netflix officially released season four of its docu-series, which follows the Formula 1 championship and provides detailed insight into what happens behind the scenes and off-track, as well as looking at the on-track drama between drivers. However some drivers, including Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, but most notably 2021 Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, have been critical of how some drama is exaggerated for entertainment reasons. As a result, Max Verstappen has actually refused to be involved in the next series.
Former Ferrari driver and current Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali admitted that the ‘fake drama’ will be discussed with Netflix bosses, but at the same time he highlighted just how successful the series has been in boosting the Formula 1 popularity, especially in the United States, with tens of millions of new fans tuning in every weekend after seeing the Netflix series and thus discovering the sport.
“There is no question that the Netflix project has had a very successful effect,” – Stefano Domenicali said, as reported by Motorsport – “In order to ignite the interest of a new audience, a tone was used that in some ways focused on dramatising the story. It’s an opportunity, but I think it needs to be understood. We talked about it this weekend [in Bahrain] at a meeting with the teams as well. We will also talk to Netflix, because it is necessary that the story does not move away from reality, otherwise it no longer fits.” – he added.
The Formula 1 boss also admitted that he does not agree with Max Verstappen view and call not to take part in the future series of ‘Drive to Survive’, explaining the solution would be to have an open dialogue between Formula 1, the teams, drivers and Netflix to better frame the content in a way that pleases all parties.

“A driver who refuses to participate because he feels he is not being represented in the right way is not being constructive; so a dialogue is needed to understand how he can be included in a format that he feels is correct It is a topic that we will address together with the drivers. We have to make sure that a project that has generated such exceptional traction has a language that continues to appeal, but without distorting the image and the meaning of the sport that we live with every day.” – Stefano Domenicali concluded.
