He may have endured something of a nightmare in the race, but Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel still did enough in China to jump to the top of our index of driver form.

In a brand-new feature for 2018, Formula 1’s team of experts assess each driver after every Grand Prix and score them according to their performance across the weekend – taking machinery out of the equation The Formula1.com experts’ scores are then combined to produce an ongoing overall ranking which reflects driver form – taking only the three most recent races into account.

1. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) +1 – Brilliant pole but scuppered by strategy. Drove brilliantly all weekend
2. Fernando Alonso (McLaren) +4 – Climbed six places in a race in which no drivers in front retired
3. Kevin Magnussen (Haas) -2 – Another solid outing compromised by the safety car
4. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) +5 – The biggest climber this week after a stellar weekend
5. Nico Hulkenberg (Renault) +2 – Scored points in every race this season. Close to the top of his game
6. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) -3 – A rare off weekend. Scruffy qualifying and lacked pace on race day
7. Marcus Ericsson (Sauber) -3 – Poor Saturday and hit with a penalty, but solid race halts his slide
8. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) +/- – Consistent weekend, despite bungled strategy
9. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) *new entry – Could have won without the safety car. Finding form
10. Pierre Gasly (Toro Ross) -5 – Torrid weekend. Plummeting down the rankings after hitting his team-mate
