Lewis Hamilton’s emotional outburst during the Hungarian Grand Prix has highlighted a rather worrying situation within Scuderia Ferrari.
At the moment, both Lewis Hamilton and the Ferrari Formula 1 team are going through a challenging period. The results are slow to come, and the mood of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion appears to be increasingly affected. The remarks made by Lewis Hamilton over the course of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend sparked significant debate among fans, commentators, and insiders.
Peter Windsor, a former Williams and Ferrari employee during the 1990s, addressed this delicate moment on his YouTube channel. The experienced journalist and former team insider suggested that Lewis Hamilton should consider making a major and potentially drastic change in order to revive his season and get back to his usual competitive level.
The reflection
Peter Windsor attempted to analyse and explain the difficult phase Lewis Hamilton is currently experiencing with Ferrari, focusing in particular on the seven-time champion’s recent comments. These were strong statements that have certainly raised eyebrows and prompted many questions about Hamilton’s current motivation and mental approach. Windsor noted that for a driver with such a remarkable career record and a high-profile contract with Ferrari, speaking and feeling that way—even if intended sarcastically—was not the right course of action.
Windsor urged Lewis Hamilton to engage in serious self-reflection, stressing that the British driver should not even have answered certain questions from the media, and above all, he must think carefully about why he is not performing behind the wheel as he should. According to Peter Windsor, recognising the root cause of these struggles is crucial if Hamilton wants to regain his top form and help Ferrari achieve better results in the second half of the season.
The major change
In Peter Windsor’s view, Lewis Hamilton needs to make a clear separation between his commercial persona—the brand he has cultivated and built over many years—and his role as a professional racing driver. The former Williams and Ferrari man delivered some particularly strong observations, stating that everything now seems to revolve around money, branding, and a public image. He argued that this tendency started at Ferrari when Hamilton appeared dressed in black and showcased the iconic Ferrari F40, rather than maintaining a total focus on being a Ferrari racing driver.
Peter Windsor went on to say that Lewis Hamilton simply needs to embrace the privilege of racing for Ferrari and focus entirely on being a driver with maximum concentration. This, Windsor believes, should be Hamilton’s priority during the August summer break, a time when many drivers and teams regroup and prepare for the decisive final phase of the season. However, he acknowledged that this would be a difficult challenge for Lewis Hamilton, as shedding the public brand he has become and returning to the mindset of a pure racing driver would require a truly radical transformation. In Peter Windsor’s opinion, such a bold shift is exactly what Lewis Hamilton needs to reignite his performance levels and give Ferrari the competitive spark they need.
