Focus on 2024
The the 2023 Formula One season concluded with the 22nd and final Grand Prix on the calendar in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina circuit, but it can be said that the thoughts of all the drivers are already turned to the next year. For a few, if not none, the goal will be to confirm themselves, as in the case of the world champion Max Verstappen, while for the majority of competitors, it will obviously be to improve results that fell below expectations or were too far from the dominance of Red Bull. The drive and motivation are there, but as always, caution will still be required on the track.
Penalty Points
In the 2023 Formula One championship, the desire for a comeback in the standings often translated into overtakes or daring maneuvers, some of which ended with contacts or violations of the sporting regulations. For this reason, the responsible drivers were penalized with the addition of penalty points to their FIA Superlicense. The rule, introduced in 2014, provides for the application of one or more points (depending on the severity of the action) for all drivers who committed infractions on the track during a Grand Prix.
Risk of Disqualification
Twelve months after the assignment of the point, the latter is eliminated, with the Superlicense gradually returning to zero, provided there are no further infractions. However, if a driver were to reach or exceed a total of 12 points, the competitor is disqualified for the next race, with the absence automatically revoking all accumulated points. Consequently, the 2024 season will start with negative memories of the past, although none of the drivers who will line up (curiously the same as in 2023) are seriously at risk. Sergio Perez, the vice-world champion, has been penalized the most, currently standing at 7 points. The Mexican will still need to be careful until September when all accumulated points will disappear, returning to zero, thus avoiding the risk of possible disqualification. Below is the list of drivers who faced penalties last year, along with those who will start in 2024 without any such issues.
