The risk of severe weather conditions and lightning has prompted organizers to revise the schedule for the United States round, with the race now set to begin at 13:00 local time (19:00 CET). Safety measures have already been prepared and may be implemented if necessary, even during the race itself.
Late yesterday evening, the FIA announced that the start of the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix has been brought forward by three hours, moving from the originally scheduled 16:00 to 13:00.
Weather forecasts had already raised concerns in the days leading up to the event, alerting both the International Federation and the race organizers. Hopes that the incoming weather system might change course proved unfounded, and on Saturday evening Formula 1 officials held a meeting to evaluate possible alternative solutions.
The heaviest rainfall is expected later in the afternoon, preceded by a phase of lighter rain during the early part of the day. However, the greatest concern comes from lightning, strong wind gusts (forecast to reach up to 70 km/h), and the potential for hail.
Within this context, the solution deemed most effective was adopted by bringing the start time forward, with the aim of taking advantage of the window between the two expected waves of bad weather. The Formula 2 championship schedule has also been adjusted, with the Feature Race now set to start at 9:20 local time.
“Following a meeting between the FIA, Formula 1 and the Miami Grand Prix promoter, the decision was taken to bring forward the start of Sunday’s race to 13:00 (local Miami time),” reads a joint statement. “Weather forecasts indicate severe thunderstorms later in the afternoon, close to the originally scheduled start time.”
“The decision has been made to minimize disruption and ensure the maximum possible time window to complete the Grand Prix under the best conditions, with safety as the priority for drivers, fans, teams and personnel.”
Additional safety measures have also been planned in case storms reach the circuit around the race start or while the Grand Prix is already underway.
