F1 | Mattia Binotto: “Ferrari must win races in 2022”. Mattia Binotto on the 2022 season.

Scuderia Ferrari scored third place in the 2021 Constructors’ World Championship, beating rivals McLaren with a nice final rush, also thanks to the Power Unit update introduced by the Italian side in the last races of the season.

The Maranello team now has to focus on overcoming two very difficult years without a win and look ahead: the great opportunity to fight back is represented by the change for the 2022 rules, with the introduction of ground-effect single-seaters, a very different conceput from the current Formula 1 cars.

For the Italian side, the discontinuity given by the new rules must represent the starting point to see the red team once again compete for positions that historically are more appropriate with its Formula 1 status.

President John Elkann had set the focus on the 2022 world championship, promising that Ferrari would return to battle for the world titles, challenging Red Bull and Mercedes. Mattia Binotto, team principal of Scuderia Ferrari, doesn’t feel like talking about a Ferrari fighting for the title. For the moment, the Italian engineer hopes for objectives that can withstand current expectations…

“Next year we have to do better and we have to show that we are capable of winning some races: this year we were not able to win a single race, in 2022 for me to be competitive means that in some GPs we will have to compete for the best position”. – he explained.

Showing constant progress means undermining at least one of the two contenders for the world championship …
“It is difficult to say now, because we all started with a blank sheet of paper and we are working … blindly. Not knowing what others are doing, we have to look to ourselves. In my opinion the team is working well, but we also know that the others are very strong: if they managed to make cars that were stellar on the track, they are inevitably very strong teams”. – he warned.

So what Ferrari should we expect in 2022? Fans want to forget the dark years …
“For our part, we are putting our utmost effort into it, we have prioritized 2022 because we know that there is still something to recover. Honestly, I still don’t feel up to the top, because the facts have shown that they are very strong, but the hope is to count on the continued progress of a team that I see united.”

A lot of positive information has been reported regarding the Superfast engine: the new power unit that will be homologated before the end of the year should close the power gap from the Mercedes and Honda engines, while the indications on the new hybrid have also been encouraging in the second part of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

The unknown, it is useless to hide it, lies in the car. The 672, this is the project’s acronym, was born in the Racing Department which has been modernized to be in line with a factory that has equipped itself with new technological tools such as the innovative simulator to make a big leap in quality.

So in Maranello they have everything they need to look up again: we’ll wait to see the new ground-effect single-seater and if the technicians headed by Enrico Cardile and the aerodynamicist David Sanchez have interpreted the new rules in the right way, finding the gray areas of a regulation in which benefits can be sought.
