Andretti’s admission about Charles Leclerc’s future with Cadillac: the Monegasque driver must race to win
The American team is preparing to enter Formula 1 for the 2026 season. The current driver lineup includes Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, but that scenario could change in the near future. Mario Andretti has openly expressed his desire to bring the talent of Charles Leclerc to Cadillac once the team joins the grid.
The new team will use Ferrari power units and will rely on the SF-23 for initial on-track testing. For Andretti, using Ferrari engines is a great honor, given his lifelong passion for the Maranello-based team. The 1978 Formula 1 World Champion also admitted his deep admiration for Charles Leclerc, describing him as one of the most talented drivers currently competing in Formula 1.
The future of the Monegasque driver
Speaking during the Festival dello Sport, Mario Andretti stated that he would be ready to bring Charles Leclerc to Cadillac. The driver of car number 16 has already shown he is capable of fighting for a world title. “He can win races, and if he can do that, he can also win a championship—if he has the right car,” Mario Andretti said.
When asked about the possibility of Charles Leclerc joining the American team in the future, Andretti’s answer left little room for interpretation: “I would do it tomorrow, no question. I would welcome him with open arms.” While it may still be too early for such a move, things could change by 2027. “We need a couple of years; we must earn the right to have such a talent,” he added.
According to the former F1 champion, Charles Leclerc has already proven a lot in Formula 1 and continues to impress, even when compared to a driver of Lewis Hamilton’s caliber. “I like Leclerc; he’s a very capable driver. He definitely needs another car,” Mario Andretti added.
In recent months, there have been many rumors about Leclerc’s future beyond Ferrari, but none have yet mentioned a possible move to Cadillac. Much will depend on how competitive the American team proves to be once it makes its debut in the Formula 1 World Championhip. If the project shows potential, Cadillac could become an unexpected destination for one of the most talented drivers of his generation.
