We are used to seeing Adrian Newey wandering around the paddock or on the starting grid with his ever-present red notebook. The engineer and technical director of Red Bull is often captured while observing rival cars. Thoughtful, each time we wonder what’s going on in his mind, especially when the object of his attention is a Ferrari.
Even in Qatar, Adrian Newey didn’t lose this “habit.” A video caught him observing the mechanics working on Charles Leclerc’s SF-23, which started from the sixth position for the sprint race. Further down the grid, there was Max Verstappen. Besides, the Dutchman had just been crowned world champion for the third time at the end of the sprint race.
The video of Adrian Newey watching the Monegasque’s Ferrari went viral, mainly due to his reaction. After observing for a few seconds, the British engineer walks away with what appears to be a semi-disgusted expression. Perhaps he was even a bit amused.
It’s not difficult to imagine what he might have been thinking. Some might say, “Probably how not to build a car.” It’s hard to disagree, especially given the recent performance of the Prancing Horse, particularly on the Losail circuit, where they have been struggling.
The result of the sprint race was disappointing for the Scuderia Ferrari. Carlos Sainz finished in sixth place, and Charles Leclerc ended up thirteenth due to a penalty for track limits.
However, it’s worth remembering that in the past, Adrian Newey was close to accepting a role as an engineer at Ferrari. It’s a shame that he politely declined the offer on three different occasions.
