In Austria, during the media day, Lewis Hamilton spoke about Ferrari’s approach to the 2026 project.
The new regulations will come into force in 2026, and all teams are already working on both their 2025 and 2026 cars. The foundations for the next era of Formula 1 are being laid, though the new rules still raise several questions. How is Ferrari preparing? On Thursday at the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc discussed the progress made so far by Ferrari with regard to 2026. Leclerc also shared some early thoughts on the future car.
Ferrari is still focused on the current SF-25 and will introduce new updates this weekend, as it awaits the arrival of a new rear suspension. Work at the factory continues at full pace. The team is actively developing the 2025 car with the aim of returning to title contention, while also starting to look ahead to 2026.
Development delayed
Unlike Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton has not yet tested the 2026 car in the simulator. For now, that work has been postponed. Charles Leclerc only had his first simulator run a few days ago. During the media session, the seven-time world champion explained: “Well, he just started like two days ago. Or maybe yesterday. So I haven’t started yet.” Lewis Hamilton clarified that the reason he hasn’t been involved in simulator work is simply because the model isn’t ready yet: “The main reason is the model isn’t finished. But we’ll be starting soon.”
Lewis Hamilton will soon begin working on Ferrari’s 2026 project—his first technical contribution to Maranello’s future. The big question is: what will the seven-time world champion think once development gets underway?
