What is happening in Las Vegas is truly incredible. After Carlos Sainz’s incident that led to the cancellation of FP1, the stewards decided to postpone the second free practice session to ensure the safety of the entire circuit. However, the delays were so extensive that the organization decided to intervene, announcing only half an hour before the scheduled start of FP2 that all areas reserved for fans of the Las Vegas GP would be closed.
The statement reads: “Due to logistical considerations for fans and our staff, we have decided to close all areas reserved for Las Vegas GP fans at 1:30 local time. We look forward to welcoming fans later for an exciting FP3 and qualifying.”
Naturally, criticisms and complaints against the organizers have erupted on social media. “They kicked us out,” reads a tweet. Fans who have spent many hours in the stands without knowing anything and are now forced to leave despite having paid for their tickets.
Fans are now leaving the circuit very upset. Criticisms of Las Vegas are pouring in from all sides. What is happening is absolutely unacceptable and is causing Formula 1 a colossal embarrassment. After all the publicity for this event, what has been seen today goes beyond all limits.
People who paid a substantial ticket price and only saw scant 15 minutes of on-track action. Manhole covers lifted after three laps. The same manhole covers repaired by the addition of quick-setting cement that would likely make the track unusable in case of rain.
The debut of the Las Vegas GP could not have been worse. Entertainment is fine, but the sporting aspect should never be forgotten. Formula 1 has not done that here, and these are the consequences. A severe damage to the image of this sport.
