The Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur, has once again spoken about the high-profile announcement of Lewis Hamilton as the replacement for Carlos Sainz Jr, revealing some behind-the-scenes details about the decision.
After several weeks of silence, Fred Vasseur gave an interview to Auto Motor und Sport, where he revisited one of the biggest stories of the modern Formula 1 era: the shock move of Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes to Ferrari. The French manager explained the thinking behind the announcement, which was made at the very start of 2024. Why was the news revealed so early? According to Vasseur, the choice was deliberate and carefully calculated.
The Ferrari boss underlined the impact of media attention in Formula 1 and how crucial timing can be when such major news is shared. “It’s not about me,” Vasseur said. “But these things can affect people inside the team and make them lose focus.” In his view, avoiding unnecessary distractions during the championship can be just as important as car performance or race strategy.
Fred Vasseur also drew a comparison with other top teams. In recent seasons, McLaren has been able to work under less media pressure compared to Ferrari and Red Bull, something he sees as one of their strengths. He noted: “Look at what has happened at Red Bull in the past weeks. The only stories were rumors about Max Verstappen. McLaren, on the other hand, have managed to keep themselves away from all these tensions and speculation. That has been a real advantage for them.”
This brings the reasoning back to Ferrari’s early announcement. According to Fred Vasseur, going public with Lewis Hamilton’s arrival before the start of the new season was both a gesture of respect toward Carlos Sainz Jr and a way to ensure a calmer working environment within the team. He explained that delaying the announcement until the European races, for example between Imola and Monaco, would have created unnecessary panic and put the Scuderia under immense media pressure.
By revealing the deal early, Fred Vasseur ensured that Carlos Sainz Jr was informed from the beginning, giving him time to process the situation well before the racing calendar started. As the Frenchman put it: “That’s why I announced the signing of Lewis [Hamilton] before the start of the season. If I had done it between Imola and Monte Carlo, many people would have gone into panic mode. Instead, Carlos [Sainz Jr] knew from the start and could deal with it before everything began. His focus remained fully on the job.”
The decision highlights how much Ferrari values maintaining a stable and concentrated environment, even when making one of the boldest driver signings in its history. For Fred Vasseur, timing was not just about public relations—it was a strategic move to keep the team united, protect Carlos Sainz Jr from unnecessary speculation, and allow Lewis Hamilton’s future arrival to be seen as part of a clear long-term plan rather than a distraction.
