The FIA World Council convened for the last time in 2023 in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. Chaired by FIA Vice President for Sport Robert Reid, the meeting has decreed several changes that will be implemented in the 2024 season. In addition, the council has approved some minor modifications regarding the new regulations on power units for 2026.
Decisions made in the last WMSC meeting in Baku
“The FIA continues to explore technological innovations that will further enhance regulatory practices in the coming years,” reads the statement released by the federation a few minutes ago.
“Efforts persist to introduce measures to combat the extreme heat that drivers experienced this year in Qatar. The initial steps have already been taken following the update of the technical regulations described below to allow the installation of a cooling system on the cars.”
“The 2024 calendar, previously approved by Council members, was also discussed, where the health and well-being of all traveling personnel are a fundamental consideration for the future.”
The last meeting of the F1 Commission in Abu Dhabi had already raised some issues. Among them, the need to equip cars with cooling scoops for drivers in case of extreme temperatures. The goal is to prevent a recurrence of what was seen in Qatar this year, with several drivers suffering severe discomfort. The World Council has now officially approved what was discussed a few weeks ago.
These are the decisions taken:
1. The provision in the Technical Regulations requiring the installation of a cooling scoop in conditions of extreme heat.
2. Limiting the number and mass of certain metallic components of the floor identified as a safety risk if detached from a car.
3. Reducing the time spent on the starting grid before a Grand Prix from 50 to 40 minutes.
4. Mandatory suspension of work on cars starting from the Pit Lane. For safety reasons, it will now be obligatory to remove all personnel and equipment from the overtaking lane 90 seconds after the start of the formation lap.
5. Approved minor updates to the 2026 Sporting, Technical, and Financial Regulations.
