Ready, set, go: three months after the start of the championship, Maranello is already thinking about next year. In the storm that the Ferrari F1 team finds itself in, Frédéric Vasseur’s silent revolution is attempting to create the conditions for a brighter future.
Just as he took the reins of the Maranello team a few months ago, the new team principal of the red team inherited a turbulent situation that he is trying to change, calmly and out of the public eye.
Beyond the disappointing on-track performances, what stands out in the 2023 Ferrari is a massive turnover of personnel within the team. In an interview with Motorsport.com before Barcelona, conducted by Roberto Chinchero, Frederic Vasseur shed light on a meeting with Horner during the Monaco GP, confirming the many movements taking place in Maranello.
“At Monaco, you spoke with Christian Horner about Laurent Mekies’ contract and the possible compromise if you were to hire Red Bull personnel?” the journalist asked.
Fred Vasseur replied, “The meeting did not concern Laurent. Every year, a large company like Scuderia Ferrari loses an average of ninety people and hires just as many, if not more.” Thus, the Frenchman confirmed the comings and goings, revealing an even wider range: “Obviously, they don’t all come from Red Bull or Mercedes. But I didn’t talk about this topic with Horner,” he concluded regarding the meeting in Monaco.
The coming and going at the headquarters of the Prancing Horse can also be seen in the columns of “La Gazzetta dello Sport” on Tuesday, June 6: “Resources are needed, in terms of brains. In recent days, Frederic Vasseur has spoken about around ninety people leaving the Scuderia and at least 120 arrivals. A positive balance that aims to translate into a surplus of knowledge and, above all, ideas.”

La Gazzetta dello sport wonders: “It remains to be seen whether among those many people there will be key figures, given the recent refusals of Pierre Waché and Enrico Balbo, the imminent departure of Laurent Mekies, and the lack of a technical director. In any case, it is an attempt to reverse the trend in view of his first Ferrari, as Fred Vasseur is trying to manage and improve the one inherited from Mattia Binotto’s group,” concluded La Gazzetta dello sport.
The upcoming races will be a testing ground for the updates planned by Ferrari, as they continue to develop and better understand the car. Frederic Vasseur remains optimistic and pushes forward. Will he adopt a different strategy than in 2022 when they decided to abandon the F1-75 from the summer onwards to focus on 2023?
