On the SF-23 single-seater brought to the Hungaroring for the 2023 Hungary Grand Prix, there is not only a high-downforce front wing. During the pit stop tests, a different beam wing was noticed, and especially the engine cover with deep openings to extract heat from the radiators. The Scuderia, fearing the typical heat of Budapest (even though it should rain tomorrow), is safeguarding the reliability of the power unit, while Red Bull is reducing the air intake of the RB19. Who will be right?
Ferrari is not only seeking the right balance of the SF-23 single-seater with an evolution of the front wing, as on the red car, we have observed other adaptations for the Hungaroring track, which requires high aerodynamic load for low to medium speeds.
The aerodynamic team of the Scuderia has modified the beam wing, choosing a different version from the one used at Silverstone, with the second element that was almost horizontal, seeking maximum aerodynamic efficiency. However, on the Hungarian track, the requirements are different. Therefore, the upper flap extends the first one to favor the extraction of airflow from the rear diffuser.
Another aspect that cannot escape the observers’ attention is the engine cover with the vents for releasing the hot air from the power unit’s cooling system. On the left side, six openings are clearly visible, fully extended. In Maranello, they do not want to take any risks on the reliability of the turbocharged 6-cylinder engine at the Hungarian Grand Prix on a system that should adapt to the characteristics of the SF-23.
