In December, Scuderia Ferrari formalized the change at the top of the Formula 1 Racing Department, with Mattia Binotto leaving the Maranello team after four years as team principal and Frederic Vasseur replacing him. The highly experienced French team principal who led Alfa Romeo Sauber for the past six years will now have the difficult task of bringing the title back to Maranello after 15 years. Apart from this major change at the top of the F1 Division, the path of continuity has been chosen in Maranello for the other key figures involved in the technical project, who have already been working on the 2023 car for several months, a single-seater which is known in the factory by the acronym ‘675’.
The objective of the Prancing Horse is obviously to take a step forward compared to the last few seasons, especially in terms of updates that are needed during the championship, which proved to be a weak point in 2017, 2018 and 2022, basically in the seasons in which Ferrari came closest to the world title.
In today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gianluca Gasparini analyzed the Maranello team’s prospects for the 2023 Formula 1 season and pointed out that next year will be a crucial championship for newcomer Frederic Vasseur, but even more so for other key figures, mainly for “the men that the Frenchman has to manage”. The reference is to the technical organization chart defined as “Mattia Binotto’s staff”.
The horizontal organizational structure desired by Sergio Marchionne, with the presence of department managers and the absence of a single big name as technical director, had led to Enrico Cardile being in charge of the chassis department, David Sanchez number one in aerodynamics and Enrico Gualtieri as a reference figure for the power unit department. “A closely linked trio that has been working together for some time”, as described by La Gazzetta dello Sport, which hypothesized that the difficulties with updates during the season may have been the result of a “lack of ideas”.

There is therefore the need in 2023 for “clear signs of improvement that could be present immediately in the start of the season, but which at least must arrive even later“, highlighting the obligation to “bring out more courage“. Finally Gianluca Gasparini concluded: “More under examination than Frederic Vasseur will be the designers and their development capacity”.
