Will Frederic Vasseur’s Ferrari be completely different from the one led by Mattia Binotto in the last few years? Very likely, even if there won’t be any substantial changes during the first part of the 2023 Formula 1 world championship. We will have to wait a few months to see any radical changes within the Maranello team. Or maybe not? Everything will depend on the results that the SF-23 challenger will take with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in the start of the world championship…
As underlined by several media outlets since his official appointment at the top of the Ferrari Formula 1 Division, Frederic Vasseur has approach of someone who laughs and always tends to play down any errors, but then when you least expect it, he makes you pay for it at the first wrong move. In the 2023 Formula 1 campaign, among those who will undoubtedly be under close observation at Scuderia Ferrari there is clearly Inaki Rueda. Forewarned is forearmed goes the saying…
The Spanish engineer and strategist of Scuderia Ferrari made several strategy errors during the previous Formula 1 championship and some of the strategical calls made by the Maranello pit wall were very difficult to understand. Among the most glaring strategy errors, there are those in the Monaco Grand Prix, when Charles Leclerc was leading the race, but was called for a pointless three-lap stint on intermediate tyres, finishing outside the podium. Or Silverstone when Ferrari didn’t bring the Monegasque driver back to the pits for a late tyre change during the safety car period, or worse still the unfortunate strategy of Budapest with Charles Leclerc once again as a victim, as Ferrari opted for hard tyres that could not work given the track conditions. But despite everything Inaki Rueda has always enjoyed the complete trust of Mattia Binotto. However, the Italian manager is no longer in charge of the Maranello Racing Division, which means that something could change between now and the next few months…
The Spaniard’s position within Scuderia Ferrari still seems to be very solid (at the moment). But with Frederic Vasseur as the new team principal, Inaki Rueda will have his (last) chance as head of Ferrari strategy. This means that the Spanish engineer will no longer be able to make the mistakes seen during the 2022 F1 campaign. In the past, Ferrari made structural changes for much less, so we’ll see how the story ends.

On the other hand, it is not possible for a Formula 1 team like Scuderia Ferrari to make such blatant mistakes in terms of strategy. Especially in the first part of last year’s season, when the F1-75 challenger was capable of fighting against Red Bull. Then more often than not the intended victim of these unfortunate strategies was always Charles Leclerc… The very one who fought with Max Verstappen to win races, at least until Ferrari had the pace on the track to match Red Bull, before losing the battle in the second part of the championship.
