Scuderia Ferrari’s work will have to continue on the path already undertaken in the Bahrain testing session at the factory with the hope of recovering at least the third place in the constructors standings at the end of the 2021 Formula 1 season.
The road to do so is very long and the Maranello team will have to deal, at some point, with the lack of resources as they will all be redirected to the 2022 project. The gaps with other cars in the middle of the standings will be minimal and there may be tracks more or less suitable to demonstrate the new vitality put in place during the tests: the commitment must not be lacking.
“Power, reliability, confidence of the data obtained in the simulations. These are the ingredients useful for the tacit optimism of the technicians and the hope of the Ferrari fans. Nothing that guarantees a hint of euphoria, given the recent disappointments.” – wrote Giorgio Terruzzi in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. If the data on power seems excellent, especially looking at the performance of the Alfa Romeo team, for reliability it will be necessary to wait for the response on track. However, the kilometers covered in the tests are a good start, also considering how some Mercedes-powered teams had the greatest problems.
“The real crux lies in the synergy to be found between increased power and new solutions adopted to obtain greater grip. The fact of having found a correlation between what emerged in the wind tunnel and the first results on the track is comforting, but it serves only as a starting point. Ferrari was forced to make a bigger step than other teams and so the evolutions designed for the SF21 on the engine front, connected to aerodynamics, travel on a thin ridge, to be explored over three / four GPs. It will be like playing a sort of chess game every Sunday. Not surprisingly, Ferrari seems to be more confident about performance in qualifying rather than in the race, when the balance of the components will dictate tire wear and therefore pace.” – Concludes Terruzzi in his analysis.
