The current Formula 1 season has seen moments of great excitement as well as just as many challenges for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, a high-profile pairing still seeking stable balance. Interviewed by Sky Sport Italia during the Imola weekend, the Briton spoke about the car’s crucial weaknesses following China.
Lewis Hamilton’s brightest moment this year was undoubtedly in China, during the sprint race. It was there that the driver truly grasped the car’s potential, pushing it toward a setup that seemed to work properly.
However, as Lewis Hamilton himself recounted, “then we had to take a few steps back in some areas and couldn’t get back to that level.” An admission that highlights the difficulty of finding the right configuration for an extremely sensitive car with a very narrow operating window.
According to the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, the car’s potential is there, but a key element is needed to unlock it. “If the rear is solid, you can use it as an anchor, it’s a key aspect,” Hamilton states, emphasizing how throughout his winning years, he could always count on a stable rear base.
Returning to the post-China situation, the Briton also confirmed the shift compared to his teammate. In fact, while Lewis Hamilton had to “backtrack” on certain aspects, “Charles followed a different path in the car’s setup, which worked well on most circuits.”
Lewis Hamilton is still looking ahead, convinced that ongoing testing and upcoming upgrades could help close the gap. “The car is good, but the road is still long,” he says realistically.
This situation places Ferrari at a crossroads: continue working on a complex but potentially winning car, or fall back and focus on next year. In the meantime, Lewis Hamilton does not hide his desire for improvement, noting that the pressure on him is immense, but it is precisely that tension that has fueled his championship career.
The unresolved issue at the rear, therefore, remains the true mystery of a Ferrari eager to return to dominance, with Lewis Hamilton ready to make the difference once that balance is finally achieved.
