F1 drivers take on hilarious Generation Game challenge: old vs new generation battle
The Generation Game is a fun concept where different generations compete by identifying objects, trends, and cultural references from various eras. The idea is simple: participants answer quiz questions about iconic elements from the past and present, revealing how well different age groups understand each other’s cultural background.
Recently, the official Formula 1 YouTube channel released its own version of the challenge, bringing together almost the entire current F1 driver lineup. Split into “old generation” and “new generation” teams, the drivers were tasked with recognising a mix of nostalgic icons and modern references — with highly entertaining results.
Notably, Fernando Alonso was absent from the video, and his absence was felt by the so-called “older generation” group, which ultimately struggled to keep up and ended up being overtaken by the younger drivers.
Funny team divisions and “middle generation” debate
Even the way the drivers were assigned to each category became part of the entertainment. Drivers like Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, and Pierre Gasly — often considered part of a “middle generation” in Formula 1 — jokingly commented that they would much rather be classified as young than old.
The light-hearted debate added an extra layer of humor to the video, highlighting just how blurred the generational lines are in today’s Formula 1 paddock.
From Walkmans to Minecraft: chaotic and funny answers
The quiz featured a wide mix of cultural references, from Walkmans, fax machines and floppy disks to modern social media trends and even characters like the Minecraft Creeper. The contrast between eras led to a series of unpredictable answers and clear generational gaps in knowledge.
Some drivers showed impressive cross-generational awareness. Lando Norris and Oliver Bearman stood out with strong performances, correctly identifying a large number of references across different eras.
Others found the challenge more difficult. Among them, Kimi Antonelli struggled the most, managing only five correct answers. Only Sergio Pérez scored lower, finishing behind him in the overall ranking.
New generation takes the win
Despite the nostalgic nature of many of the questions, it was ultimately the new generation of drivers who came out on top. Their familiarity with both modern culture and selected older references gave them a clear advantage over their rivals.
However, many fans were left wondering how the outcome might have changed had Fernando Alonso taken part in the challenge, given his extensive experience and reputation as one of the most knowledgeable drivers on the grid.
A fun reminder of F1’s diverse paddock
Overall, the Generation Game video offered a light-hearted look at life inside the Formula 1 paddock, blending humour, pop culture and personality. It highlighted not only the differences between generations but also the unique character of today’s drivers.
In a sport defined by intense competition, the video served as a reminder that Formula 1 also has a playful side — where drivers can laugh at themselves and fans can enjoy a different perspective on their favourite stars.
