After the double-header in Baku and Montreal, there is a one week break ahead of the next round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the British Grand Prix, making it a good opportunity to take a look at the situation on the development front. The report of the aerodynamic updates goes beyond the mere adaptation operations which is done each race weekend based on the characteristics of the individual tracks and focuses exclusively on the introduction of specific updates or new component.
The development race still sees Red Bull and Ferrari as protagonists. In Azerbaijan, the Anglo-Austrian team has introduced an important floor evolution package, with particular attention to the inlet grille of the side Venturi channels and the diffuser. On the RB18 there is also an upgrade step for the cooling of the front braking system.
Contrasting with the approach at the start of the championship, a phase in which Ferrari postponed developments up to the complex Barcelona package, the Maranello team introduced small innovations in the Baku and Montreal races. New aerodynamic mirror mounts have arrived in the Azerbaijani capital, while in Canada Charles Leclerc raced with a more efficient rear wing. The wing was originally planned for Silverstone and the absence of spare parts prevented its use on Carlos Sainz’s car. However, Mattia Binotto has hinted at the arrival of a new update package in England.
Among the other updates in the last double-header, Mercedes included a new aerodynamic appendage to the rear-view mirrors and the new floor brought to Canada, but not confirmed in the race. Alpine debuted the new sidepods in Baku, experiencing a great leap forward in terms of aerodynamic efficiency, as well as a new beam-wing in Montreal. Finally, McLaren has updated its ailerons.
