In the span of 12 months, the Scuderia Ferrari has gone from 157 to 78 points after five races. Mercedes remains unchanged, while Aston Martin has 17 times more points than in 2022.
Ferrari difficulties also reflects in the numbers
It has certainly not been a happy start to the 2023 Formula One season for Scuderia Ferrari. The Maranello-based team has only reached the podium once, at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan and otherwise the Italian side has been beaten by Red Bull and Aston Martin, showing only flashes of brilliance in the qualifying sessions before falling back in the race.
A Ferrari halfway there
It’s a far cry from the 2022 Formula 1 championship, when the F1-75 thrilled Ferrari fans by winning two out of the first three races with Charles Leclerc and was leading both championships after the fifth Grand Prix, which was also held in Miami last year. Despite losing to Max Verstappen and Red Bull, the Italian side was first in the constructors’ championship with 157 points. One year later, Miami represented an unexpected step back for Scuderia Ferrari after the promising signs in Melbourne and Baku: they now have 78 points, half of the total that Ferrari had at the same point in the 2022 Formula One season.

Aston Martin’s improvement
As was clear ever since the winter pre-season testing session, the team that has grown the most in 2023 is Aston Martin. The British team has replaced Ferrari as the anti-Red Bull side, although it is a more formal than substantive role, since Fernando Alonso – despite finishing on the podium four times in five races – has never really been close to challenging for the lead positions. For Aston Martin, 2023 has represented a significant step forward, as the Silverstone-based team has 17 times more points than last year. Mercedes, despite its claims at the beginning of the year, has remained unchanged: 95 points in 2022, 96 in 2023. All other teams have lost points, which have all ended up in the hands of Red Bull and Aston Martin.
