Following a completely unexpected qualifying session that saw Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc take the front row for the Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix, when the lights went out, the two Ferrari drivers remained “stuck” in their positions at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Max Verstappen, starting in third, surged out of his slot with impressive acceleration. The same goes for Sergio Perez, who was in contention for the race lead before the contact with Charles Leclerc. Following these events, Carlos Sainz is calling on Scuderia Ferrari for an urgent analysis of the issues that arose during the starts of the Mexican Grand Prix.
The driver of the SF-23 #55 initially commented on the just-concluded race, delving into certain topics. “Very chaotic, as always in Mexico. The braking at turn 1 was complex; everyone tried to brake as late as possible to maintain their position, and I think Checo was unlucky, while Charles was fortunate.” – he pointed out.
This is the second consecutive Sunday where Charles Leclerc lost the top spot after starting from pole position. In fact, in Austin, Lando Norris arrived at the first corner before him, starting from the second grid slot.
“We need to thoroughly analyze the starts,” observed Carlos Sainz. “Neither of us had a great start. I believe that both Charles and I had very similar starts, while Max Verstappen was lightning-quick off the line.”

After assessing the difficulties on Sunday, Carlos Sainz also added that Ferrari had struggled with starts throughout the Mexican weekend. It was likely very challenging to find the right clutch setup on a low-grip track like the one in Mexico.
“We’ve been struggling since FP1 on this surface and with this grip,” he added. “Perhaps we weren’t able to get everything perfect for this weekend after some very strong starts in the recent past. We need to consider this aspect for the future.” – the Spanish driver concluded following the Mexico City Grand Prix.
