Can Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz surpass Fernando Alonso in the 2023 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship? With Aston Martin now in a free fall, Ferrari finds itself in a battle with Mercedes for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.
After the stunning setback for the British team, with both drivers (Stroll and Alonso) failing to make it to Q3, Carlos Sainz has set his sights on his fellow countryman.
If he hadn’t lost the Qatar race, where he couldn’t start due to a technical issue with the car, the path for driver #55 would have been more straightforward. But instead:
“Without Qatar, I thought I could make it. After what happened… Losing a race is tough. I’ve lost a lot of points. I will try again,” Carlos Sainz stated in an interview for the official Formula 1 website.
“Not against Fernando, or against Lewis, or anyone else. I’ll do it for myself. I will give it my all, push until the end of the year as I always do,” he continued, emphasizing his need to finish the season in top form.
Especially after the races before Qatar. The first reference is, of course, Monza, where he claimed pole position and battled with the Red Bulls until the end, securing a podium. The second is undoubtedly the splendid performance during the Singapore weekend, where he was an absolute dominator with a pole and Ferrari’s first win in the Fred Vasseur era.
“I just want to get back to how I was before and keep having fun with this car,” he concluded in the interview.
Carlos Sainz has a good chance of success in Austin since Fernando Alonso will start from eighteenth place. The Spanish driver will start from the fourth position in Sunday’s race and it will be crucial to finish at least in the top 5 and ahead of the Mercedes cars to shorten the gap with them.
