During the morning practice session at the Bahrain International Circuit, the technicians worked on the disassembled cars and therefore it was possible to see some interesting updates. In this article we want to focus on the braking system, with Red Bull and Ferrari which, together with Brembo, have brought about changes for the new 2023 brake calipers:
Red Bull brake caliper: maximum cooling on the RB19
The close collaboration between Red Bull and Brembo has produced a very innovative looking front brake caliper. It immediately catches the eye given that how pins and holes are present on the entire external surface of the caliper. These processes allow for the surface increase of the caliper affected by the air flow. The consequence is a greater heat dissipation at the expense of an weight increase. This allows the Milton Keynes team to keep the caliper cooler and therefore avoid system malfunctions. This solution denotes a great attention to every single-seater component and careful study of every detail. Brembo technicians certainly helped Red Bull with their experience, meeting the requests of the world champion team.
Ferrari brake caliper: for the SF-23 there is an installation change
The Ferrari caliper, on the other hand, was not clearly visible as it was hidden by the (unusually light) cover, but an interesting detail can still be seen, as reported by the Italian website f1ingenerale.com. In fact, on the SF-23 the installation position of the caliper has changed compared to the F1-75 and is now more similar to the Red Bull one, from back to front. This could be due to a different management of the internal flows on this year’s car which required that the caliper be mounted in a different position to have the necessary cooling. Furthermore, a different assembly position could also simplify the braking system operations for the Maranello team. This modification also slightly changes the weight distribution, moving it more towards the front end.
We’ll see if these innovations on the Red Bull and Ferrari brake calipers will allow an increase in performance for the two teams that performed best last season.
