Lewis Hamilton’s weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix started disastrously with an early exit in the Sprint Qualifying session. This event was particularly crucial for Scuderia Ferrari, which introduced its new rear suspension upgrade aiming to close the performance gap with McLaren. However, so far, the results remain uncertain. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in the first round of the Belgian GP Sprint Qualifying; here is what happened.
It has been an uphill weekend for the British driver, who began with strong statements in interviews, urging the team to improve. Fortunately, this setback came only during the Sprint Qualifying, but it still represents an additional blow for Ferrari, which will now be unable to observe the car’s behavior during the fast qualifying laps ahead of Sunday’s race.
Lewis Hamilton’s Mistakes in Qualifying
During the Sprint Qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in the first round after finishing seventeenth. The reasons behind this outcome are twofold and closely connected. Hamilton made two errors during both flying laps, with the second proving to be decisive.
On his first flying lap on the yellow-worn tires, the Briton made a mistake in Turn 14 that temporarily dropped him to fifteenth place. This raised some questions about Ferrari’s performance since Charles Leclerc was around eighth place during this same phase of the session.
During his second attempt, Lewis Hamilton was only marginally improving and was just over a tenth of a second above the cutoff time after completing the second sector. The critical error occurred at the final corner, where the rear of his SF-25 locked up, causing him to spin out.
It is quite unusual to see Lewis Hamilton make two consecutive mistakes in the same qualifying round. Alarm bells are ringing, especially considering that his teammate’s performance has also been underwhelming. All eyes are now on Ferrari and the new upgrade they brought to the track to assess whether it will bring the desired improvement in the coming races.
