After securing victory in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton arrives at the Austrian Grand Prix full of confidence and momentum. However, according to former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola, there may be another factor working in the seven-time world champion’s favour: the characteristics of the Red Bull Ring itself.
Mazzola believes the Austrian circuit could suit Lewis Hamilton’s driving style better than that of Charles Leclerc, making the intra-team battle at Ferrari one of the most fascinating storylines of the weekend.
The Red Bull Ring is a unique challenge
The Austrian circuit may be one of the shortest tracks on the Formula 1 calendar, but it is also one of the most difficult to interpret from a technical standpoint. Heavy braking zones, aggressive acceleration points and constant elevation changes place unique demands on the car, creating a very different challenge compared to circuits like Barcelona or Silverstone.
Despite featuring relatively few corners, finding the ideal setup is far from straightforward. Both the characteristics of the car and the driving style of the driver can have a major influence on overall performance.
Mazzola sees a possible advantage for Hamilton
In his analysis, Luigi Mazzola highlighted how the Red Bull Ring could be particularly well suited to the Briton’s strengths.
According to the former Ferrari engineer, the circuit tends to reward a car with a slight tendency toward understeer, a balance characteristic that the British driver has historically managed very effectively throughout his career. Lewis Hamilton has often demonstrated that he feels comfortable with cars that require precision on corner entry and a very clean approach through the mid-corner phase.
His ability to adapt to a stable front end and maintain momentum through long, loaded corners has frequently been one of his greatest assets.
Charles Leclerc prefers a more responsive front end
The situation is somewhat different when discussing Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque driver has built many of his strongest performances around cars that are particularly sharp at the front and capable of delivering an immediate response during direction changes. When a car develops a tendency toward understeer, Charles Leclerc often has to adapt his natural driving style, potentially reducing some of the advantage he is normally able to create, especially over a single qualifying lap.
For that reason, Mazzola believes the Austrian circuit could theoretically favour Lewis Hamilton in the direct battle between Ferrari’s two drivers.
Leclerc should never be underestimated
That analysis does not mean the Moneagsque is at a disadvantage before the weekend even begins. The Ferrari driver has repeatedly demonstrated an impressive ability to adapt quickly to less-than-ideal technical situations, often finding effective solutions as the weekend progresses.
Furthermore, the Red Bull Ring is an extremely short circuit where only a few hundredths of a second can separate drivers during qualifying. Even a small setup improvement can completely alter the competitive picture.
Ferrari arrives in Austria full of confidence
One of the most important points highlighted by Mazzola concerns Ferrari’s current momentum. Following the victory in Barcelona, the Scuderia heads to Austria with a level of confidence that was not evident during the opening races of the season.
The upgrades introduced in recent weeks appear to have improved the behaviour of the SF-26, particularly in terms of rear-end stability and consistency over long runs.
Those strengths could prove especially valuable at the Red Bull Ring, where tyre management and confidence under braking often play a decisive role.
The internal battle could become a major storyline
If Ferrari confirms the competitiveness it displayed in Spain, one of the key themes of the Austrian Grand Prix could become the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
On one side, the British driver arrives buoyed by a victory that has strengthened both his confidence and his leadership within the Ferrari garage. On the other, Charles Leclerc will be eager to deliver a strong response and reaffirm his status as one of the team’s key reference points.
It is a duel that could provide valuable indications not only for the Austrian Grand Prix, but also for the remainder of the championship.
What to expect from the weekend
According to Mazzola’s interpretation, the Red Bull Ring will represent an important test of Ferrari’s recent progress.
If the SF-26 confirms the positive signs seen in Barcelona, the Scuderia should arrive at the weekend with a realistic opportunity to challenge for the leading positions. Within that scenario, the potential advantage enjoyed by Lewis Hamilton due to the characteristics of the circuit could become a particularly interesting factor to monitor.
Luigi Mazzola is not suggesting that Lewis Hamilton holds a clear superiority over Charles Leclerc. However, he does identify several characteristics of the Red Bull Ring that could favour the seven-time world champion.
The circuit’s natural tendency to reward a slightly understeering balance, combined with its specific technical demands, appears to align particularly well with the driving style that Lewis Hamilton has successfully relied upon throughout his Formula 1 career.
