Ferrari heads into the 2026 season with growing optimism, but will it truly be the right year for Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton to fight for the Formula 1 world championship? For now, Stefano Domenicali has chosen to shine the spotlight firmly on the Monegasque driver and the expectations surrounding him at Maranello.
Stefano Domenicali’s words have once again reignited attention on Charles Leclerc and on the weight of responsibility that comes with leading Ferrari’s title ambitions. In an interview with Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, the President of Formula 1 spoke openly about the talent of the Ferrari driver and the crucial role he could play in the Scuderia’s pursuit of a long-awaited world championship.
Domenicali praises Leclerc and his role at Ferrari
During the interview, the former Ferrari team principal described Charles Leclerc as one of the finest representatives of modern Formula 1, not only because of his speed and performances on track, but also because of the image and professionalism he brings to the championship. “Leclerc is one of the best young men Formula 1 could have, for the way he behaves and for the talent he shows behind the wheel,” Domenicali explained to Corriere della Sera.
The F1 President also stressed that Ferrari must place the Monegasque in a genuine position to fight for the world title by providing him with a truly competitive car as soon as possible. For a driver of Leclerc’s calibre, the technical package will be decisive in determining whether his potential can finally be converted into championship success.
The world championship challenge
According to Domenicali, once Ferrari succeeds in building a car capable of consistently winning races, it will then be up to Leclerc to prove that he deserves that opportunity. “Ferrari must give him a car capable of winning, but when that moment comes Leclerc will have to show that he can exploit it fully and win the world championship,” he added.
The President of Formula 1 also reminded fans that victory is never automatic, even with a competitive car at one’s disposal. He referred to recent examples to underline just how difficult it can be to convert a strong technical package into a world title. Today, Leclerc and Hamilton represent the great hope of Ferrari supporters worldwide, but Domenicali’s message is clear: first, the team must deliver a car worthy of the Prancing Horse’s ambitions, and then the drivers must demonstrate the ability, consistency and mental strength required to transform that opportunity into a championship triumph.
