Ferrari wrapped up the F1 pre-season test at the Bahrain International Circuit with highly convincing pace, but according to a former driver, that may not necessarily be a positive sign for the 2026 season.
The Scuderia concluded the Bahrain test on a high, with Charles Leclerc setting the fastest single-lap time of the session. The Monegasque delivered a series of extremely quick runs, showing that the SF-26 already appears to be built on a very solid foundation. Throughout the day, the Ferrari driver followed the planned programme with precision, focusing on every aspect of the new car to collect crucial data ahead of the season opener.
Despite these encouraging signals, several experts are urging caution. Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert, speaking to Snabbare, stressed that test lap times should not be interpreted as a definitive indicator of the SF-26’s true competitiveness.
Ferrari does not have a huge advantage, says Herbert
“In my opinion Ferrari looked ahead because the others haven’t shown their hand yet,” Herbert explained. “If they really had a big advantage, they would keep it hidden and not reveal it straight away.”
Herbert also expressed doubts about Ferrari’s real ability to fight for the 2026 world title, recalling how strong testing performances in the past have not always translated into consistent results once the championship got underway.
“I always hope Ferrari can return to winning ways, but often they look competitive in testing and then the championship tells a different story. 2026 represents a huge opportunity because everyone starts from zero, but you need the right people and a solid structure. Will the changes that have been made be enough? I’m not so sure.”
