There have been several meetings about the future engines in Formula 1, starting with the 2025 season, but for now not much progress has been achieved. It is not even clear yet whether the new engines will have four or six cylinders, as it seems there are two sides with different views: Mercedes and Renault represent one, Ferrari and Red Bull the other..
According to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, Ferrari “is open to a new start with a four-cylinder (V4). But what about on the subject of hybrids? Scuderia Ferrari is ready for a change too. Recuperation on the front axle is closer to series production than the MGU-H, which has not yet made it into a single road car.
If there is no agreement by the end of the summer, the FIA might decide on the details on their own. The Concorde Agreement expires at the end of 2025. For 2026, the FIA can do what they want.
Renault says that new manufacturers could get a temporarily higher budget cap or more test bench hours to make up for the development disadvantage that they would have.
To sum up, ‘Auto Motor und Sport’ reports that Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull are ready for a complete reset [Ferrari could even agree on a V4], which would also help new manufacturers like Audi and Porsche, who want to enter the sport, but Mercedes and Renault want to stay with the V6 and instead prefer an optimization.
