In 2024, the format of the ‘sprint’ weekends will most likely be modified. The final decision will be made at the Formula 1 Commission meeting scheduled for tomorrow in Spa-Francorchamps, but there don’t seem to be any critical issues that could convince the FIA and the teams to reject Liberty Media’s proposal.
The current format, which will be in place this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix, includes free practice on Friday morning and the qualifying session in the afternoon, determining the starting grid for the Grand Prix. Saturday’s focus is on the ‘sprint’ event, with qualifying in the morning and the race in the afternoon.
The idea for the upcoming Formula 1 season is to make the weekend schedule more straightforward. The new format would keep the free practice session on Friday morning, with the afternoon qualifying session dedicated to the sprint race, which will take place late Saturday morning. After the ‘sprint’ is completed, Saturday afternoon will feature the qualifying session for the Grand Prix on the following day, concluding the day.
The weekend’s proceedings would follow a more straightforward flow, as today it is always necessary to remember that Friday’s starting grid is for Sunday’s Grand Prix. However, the downside would be managing Saturday, as it would involve the atypical situation of having a qualifying session just a few hours after the end of a race.
