“I am sorry,” former Scuderia Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola, now executive coach, emotional speaker and testimonial, trainer in the field of leadership, begins sincerely in a recent analysis he made about the Maranello team’s current difficult moment, almost foreshadowing that miracles cannot be expected in the near future for Ferrari. These are the words of someone who has worked alongside the Michael Schumacher – Jean Todt duo in the red team and who sees the Frenchman as the symbol that Maranello has been missing for a long time.
“I believe that Frederic Vasseur’s approach to the team’s problems is the wrong one. And believe me, I speak with full knowledge,” the Italian engineer clarifies.
“Maranello has been lacking technical leadership for a long time, far too long,” he adds. “Obviously, it is right to give Frederic Vasseur time, but I doubt he will be able to replicate what Jean Todt did. They may share French passports, but we’ll see about the rest…”
“The point,” Luigi Mazzola explains, “is that Jean Todt came to Maranello after winning everything with Peugeot. What has Vasseur won so far in his career?” – the Italian pointed out.

Charles Leclerc? “I fear he won’t renew his contract”
The former Ferrari member then reflects on Charles Leclerc’s difficult situation, as the Monegasque driver has never been in a position to fight for the Formula 1 title during his time with Scuderia Ferrari and is nearing the end of his contract with the Maranello team.
“I fear he may not renew his contract,” Luigi Mazzola clarifies. “The risk for him is becoming another Jean Alesi. Believe me, I personally witnessed Jean’s torture, in sporting terms. He stayed at Ferrari for five long years without ever having a championship-winning car.”
The engineer concludes with a challenge that also serves as an appeal to the management in Maranello: “Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pair Leclerc with a technical director who matches his talent level.”
