In his latest livestream, Italian journalist and Formula 1 expert Roberto Chinchero commented on Charles Leclerc’s performance in the latest round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the Miami Grand Prix, which was held at the Miami International Autodrome in Florida, USA.
In particular, the journalist focused on how harshly some media criticized his mistake, which instead stems from a driver’s natural desire to always push the limit. The Monegasque driver himself is aware of what he’s doing, following the philosophy that the English call “Do or die.”
“Charles Leclerc’s weekend has divided the audience into two camps: on one hand, some judged favorably his decision to try a more extreme setup because, on paper, it could have given him something extra. On the other hand, they criticized his inability to give up. I liked a phrase that Charles Leclerc himself said: ‘I know I have the potential in qualifying, and I go very fast. Maybe once out of ten times, I crash, but I have to keep trying.’ He always looks for that something extra, which allowed him to take poles in Baku. There, everyone praised him, but as soon as he makes a mistake for the same reason, he gets criticized. In Azerbaijan, he outperformed Carlos Sainz by 8 tenths, which means he put in his effort and took some risks,” said the journalist.
The contract renewal
Furthermore, Roberto Chinchero continued by stating that this is the best time to try extreme setups and push the limit: “We shouldn’t tell him it’s immaturity; it’s a scientific matter. He knows he’s taking risks; he’s not clueless. He always tries to give his all, knowing what he’s doing. It’s a scientific choice. Now is the best time to do it when he’s not fighting for the championship. If Ferrari becomes a stable second force, then things will change. Even if Charles Leclerc were in Fernando Alonso’s position, he couldn’t do it anymore.” – the Italian journalist pointed out.

Pressed by constant questions from concerned fans about Charles Leclerc’s departure, Roberto Chinchero shared what he heard regarding the new contract: “The renewal? I believe negotiations will start towards the end of summer. I think he will renew even if he’s not happy. But at the moment, many aren’t happy: do you think Lewis Hamilton is? George Russell? Carlos Sainz?” – the Formula 1 expert concluded his analysis.
