Spanish driver Fernando Alonso pulled off a breathtaking overtake on the last lap of the 2023 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, to secure an amazing podium finish at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on Sunday. Sergio Perez had been tailing him for over twenty laps in a faster Red Bull car, managing to pass him on the penultimate lap. Ivan Capelli, former Formula 1 driver, who raced for the Maranello team in the 1992 Formula 1 championship, commented on Fernando Alonso’s performance, praising the two-time world champion. Here are the comments of the Italian:
Ivan Capelli praises Fernando Alonso
During the post-race coverage on Sky Sport F1 Italia, Ivan Capelli stated: “Champions sense when they wake up in the morning that it’s the right day, and from the start, the opportunity was created to stay near the front and manage the situation, especially in the last few laps. Fernando also had the ability to figure out how to keep Sergio Perez at bay with the battery charge in the final straight of the track, enduring twenty laps under pressure. After losing the position on the last lap, where a normal driver might have given up, he sought the overtake, regaining it by force, proving that, despite these modern cars, a champion can still make the difference.” – the former Ferrari driver concluded at the end of the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
