Ex-Ferrari crew member details how the team managed Charles Leclerc’s explosive character. Charles Leclerc’s fiery early F1 temperament has been shaped into controlled consistency at Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc: Ferrari’s Long-Term Leader and the Evolution of a Refined Talent

Charles Leclerc is now competing in his seventh season as a Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 driver, having joined the iconic Italian team in 2019 after replacing former world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Since then, the Monegasque racer has consistently positioned himself as Ferrari’s main hope for championship contention. Out of those seven seasons, he has been the team’s undisputed lead driver in six, solidifying his role as the face of Ferrari’s modern Formula 1 project.

Since his debut in red, only Carlos Sainz has managed to outscore Leclerc across a full season. That milestone came in 2021, when the Spanish driver edged ahead in the drivers’ standings with 164.5 points to Leclerc’s 159. Sainz also secured more podium finishes that year, collecting four compared to Leclerc’s single visit to the rostrum. This was Sainz’s strongest campaign with Ferrari, and the only season in which Leclerc was statistically beaten by a teammate since joining the Scuderia.

A key figure during that period was Francesco Cigarini, a veteran Ferrari mechanic who closely worked with Carlos Sainz throughout his stint in Maranello. Cigarini, who has been deeply connected to the team’s culture and internal dynamics, also departed after the 2024 season. His exit coincided with Sainz’s move to Williams Racing, following the Spaniard’s replacement by Lewis Hamilton. Today, Cigarini contributes as a respected voice for Sky Italia, providing insight into Ferrari’s internal evolution and the transformation of their star driver, Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc vs Hamilton: A Strong Start to the 2025 Formula 1 Season

As the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship progresses, Leclerc has been outperforming his illustrious new teammate Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion. After the first 14 races of a demanding 24-race calendar, Leclerc has accumulated 151 points compared to Hamilton’s 109. His superiority is not only visible in the points tally but also in direct competition. Leclerc leads their qualifying battles with a dominant 10–4 record and has also secured more favorable race finishes with an 11–2 head-to-head advantage.

Charles Leclerc’s speed and consistency highlight his capacity to carry Ferrari’s ambitions in the current season. He claimed Ferrari’s first pole position of 2025 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, underlining his reputation as one of the fastest drivers over a single lap. However, the pole did not translate into a race victory, continuing a frustrating pattern that has often characterized Ferrari’s recent campaigns. The Scuderia’s only win in any format this season remains Lewis Hamilton’s F1 Sprint victory in China back in March.

Unlocking Potential: Ferrari’s Efforts to Refine Leclerc’s Explosive Talent

Leclerc’s Hungarian pole marked the 27th pole position of his Formula 1 career. To date, he has achieved eight Grand Prix victories and 48 podium finishes, all in Ferrari colors. However, Francesco Cigarini has suggested that for Leclerc to fully realize his immense abilities, the team needed to refine, or in his words, “tame” the young driver.

According to Francesco Cigarini, Ferrari saw in Leclerc a rare blend of speed and instinct but also recognized that such raw talent required careful shaping. He explained that when Charles Leclerc entered Formula 1, the team viewed him as the successor to Jules Bianchi, a highly promising Ferrari Academy driver whose tragic death in 2015 left a void within the Scuderia. Cigarini noted that the 27-year-old driver carried the responsibility of reigniting that hope, and Ferrari recognized a need to help him grow not only as a driver but also as a leader within the team.

The Italian mechanic highlighted that Charles Leclerc had to learn how to manage the car, the tires, and the broader communication with engineers. He pointed out that raw speed alone was not enough to succeed in modern Formula 1, where strategy, technical feedback, and race management play equally vital roles. Over the years, Ferrari worked to shape Leclerc into a more composed, calculated, and team-oriented competitor, ensuring his natural pace was matched by consistency and technical maturity.

Ferrari’s Limitations Still Holding Leclerc Back

Despite his evolution, Charles Leclerc’s record of converting pole positions into race victories remains underwhelming. Following the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, he has now failed to convert a pole into a win on 22 occasions. His most recent attempt ended with a fourth-place finish, once again raising concerns about Ferrari’s ability to provide a car capable of capitalizing on his qualifying performances.

Many within the paddock regard the Monegasque as arguably the fastest driver on the 2025 Formula 1 grid over a single lap. However, this potential is being stifled by Ferrari’s recurring shortcomings in race-day performance, strategy execution, and car reliability. For Charles Leclerc to truly deliver on the “tamed” and refined potential that Ferrari nurtured, the Scuderia must address its weaknesses and provide machinery capable of sustaining a competitive edge across full race distances.

The Hungarian Grand Prix once again illustrated this issue. Ferrari made adjustments to Leclerc’s engine mode and tire pressures in an attempt to manage excessive wear on the car’s floor. While these changes were implemented as precautionary measures, they effectively compromised Charles Leclerc’s chances of fighting for the win. What could have been a defining moment turned into another missed opportunity, with Leclerc forced to settle for a disappointing fourth-place finish despite starting from pole position.
