The good people of Maranello were woken at the crack of dawn this morning by the unmistakable rumbling of a prancing horse straddled by Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque passed through the Ferrari factory’s sacred gates to steer his SF1000 past the Maranello Museum and on to the Via Gilles Villeneuve as he headed to Fiorano, the Scuderia’s testing grounds where a day of preparation and limited running ahead of next month’s Austrian GP awaited the team.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto shares his thoughts on this symbolic moment:
What sensations did you feel watching the car today?
Mattia Binotto: “I think it’s something special. We restart, it’s important for all of us. It’s particular that we are here in Maranello, with the car that exits the historical entrance of our fabric with Charles at the wheel. It was special for the one who drove the car, Charles, but also for the people who saw it.”
Would Enzo Ferrari be happy to see a Ferrari drive on the streets of Maranello?
Mattia Binotto: “I think he would. Probably he still is, to see a red car, to hear the sound of the engine and see Charles drive it. Charles is still very young, but I think he is not only having fun, but also understands how important it is to drive for Ferrari. This year it’s our 1000th GP, Formula 1’s 70th season. I think he’s realizing what the hashtag #EssereFerrari means.”
