Emanuele Pirro is a well-known figure for motorsport fans, having raced in Formula 1 with Benetton and Scuderia Italia, before entering the history books of Le Mans thanks to five victories behind the wheel of Audi cars. In recent years he has put his experience to good use for the Federation, as a Member of the FIA Drivers Commission, working for the Race Direction. The former Italian driver explained that he follows Ferrari’s GT program with interest: “It is a special feeling for me, because of my bond with Le Mans and because it represents a return to the past. The conviction with which John Elkann has been committed to Le Mans right from the start is a very important signal, and I think they will do great things with Antonello Coletta”. The commitment to both Formula One and WEC will not leave the Maranello fans indifferent because “it’s a great way to excite the global audience of Ferrari fans” – Emanuele Pirro pointed out.
In the interview for Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Emanuele Pirro also shared his thoughts on the topic of Formula 1 for Ferrari: “The World Championship did not go as good as it could have had in 2022, due to more managerial than technical problems: but I think that Fred Vasseur will now bring positivity and concrete actions also in terms of politics, restoring order to the Scuderia’s extraordinary human resources. I don not think that big changes are needed: a change of team principal can release that potential capable of giving the team the possibility of taking that last but decisive step forward towards winning the Formula 1 championship” – explained the 61-year-old Italian.
Emanuele Pirro was also asked whether the Maranelo team should establish a clear hierarchy and give a first driver status to one driver between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz before the start of the 2023 Formula One championship: “It depends on the drivers you have in your team. For Red Bull such a problem doesn’t even arise, because Max Verstappen is so much stronger than Sergio Perez. With teammates who can be compared today such as Lewis Hamilton – George Russell or Charles Leclerc – Carlos Sainz, the team principal must also help those who are more in difficulty during the season, like a parent with a weaker child. Besides, in the decisive moments, the champion has the extra spark and makes the difference“, assured Emanuele Pirro.
