The Italian Grand Prix always represents a special appointment on the calendar regarding the technical aspects. In fact, all teams are geared towards bringing extreme aerodynamic specifications to tackle the 300km race in the Temple of Speed. Ferrari, on the occasion of the Monza Grand Prix, will bring a new rear wing with low downforce to try to achieve competitive top speeds compared to those of its main rival, the Red Bull RB18.
Straight-line performance is fundamental at Monza
The Monza circuit is a clear example of how teams go in one direction from the technical point of view. There are other tracks where each teams makes its own decisions with the goal of finding the ideal compromise regarding the choice of the downforce level in order not to excessively sacrifice either cornering or performance on the straights. Instead, in Monza, there are no compromise choices and the direction is turned exclusively towards low-load solutions. This choice is due to the fact that the straights are very long and cornering performance can be sacrificed. Furthermore, the new generation of Formula 1 cars are able to generate more than 60% of the total aerodynamic load from the floor of the car, thus guaranteeing a good level of downforce even in corners, especially at high speed.
The Ferrari rear wing which will be used at the Italian circuit consists of a main plain with a reduced chord and an almost zero angle of attack along the entire leading edge and a slightly accentuated spoon. In addition, even the mobile flap has a narrow rope length and a low incidence, characteristics that have the goal of reducing the drag. Furthermore, a consequence of the Monza wings reflects on the effectiveness of the DRS. The latter, when activated on the straights of the Temple of Speed, does not allow the drivers to gain many km / h as the portion of the movable flap that is opened is less than in other circuits and, consequently, the gain will be less for drivers with open DRS.
