During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix debriefing on Sky Sport F1 Italy, all the commentators from the Italian broadcaster commented on what happened on the track today, focusing especially on the incident involving Lando Norris and Sergio Perez. Speaking about the penalty given to the Mexican, Carlo Vanzini, Matteo Bobbi, Davide Valsecchi, and Marc Gené shared their opinions. Here are their words:
Penalties and FIA, the opinion of Italian commentators
Italian journalist Carlo Vanzini was the first to speak, saying: “We immediately said live that it was practically a copy of what happened in 2021 between Hamilton and Verstappen, where Verstappen was not penalized in the first lap, and Sergio Perez absolutely didn’t deserve a penalty. Instead, Oscar Piastri deserved a penalty yesterday. I emphasize, we need a clean slate, start over, and completely rewrite the Formula 1 regulations.” – he explaned.
After the “voice” of Formula 1, Matteo Bobbi also shared his thoughts on the contact between Lando Norris and Sergio Perez: “I’ve been struggling for years to understand the choices of the race stewards, and Verstappen built a championship with this attitude. Never disqualified, never penalized, then Perez doesn’t even do it in such a marked way, and he gets a penalty. In an incident like this, I would have given it to Norris even more.”
Returning to last week, Marc Gené also spoke about the penalty that the FIA had imposed on Carlos Sainz following the “manhole” incident in Las Vegas when the Spaniard was forced to change the batteries beyond the allowed number: “This penalty that cost Ferrari the second place in the Constructors’ Championship is incomprehensible. Just like the ten positions penalty for Sainz in Las Vegas, which also cost the team a lot. Truly incomprehensible.”

Still referring to the American race, Davide Valsecchi concluded the round of opinions, saying: “Carlos Sainz’s penalty, in my eyes, is embarrassing for both the Federation and Formula 1. One thing I wanted to tell you about today is that we need to cut down on these penalties. We want to penalize them for every little thing, and sooner or later, we won’t see these kinds of contacts anymore. It was a good fight; they should have let it go, and they tried to find fault where there wasn’t any, judging by Norris’s move.” – he concluded at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
