A bold comparison
Many Formula 1 and MotoGP fans will have come across the Instagram live streams featuring two familiar faces in motorsport, Davide Valsecchi and Marco Melandri. In the latest of these broadcasts, the former Sky Sport commentator picked up on a suggestion from the chat, embracing a comparison between Lewis Hamilton and Enea Bastianini.
Davide Valsecchi’s words
“Is Hamilton the Bastianini of Formula 1? Clearly, he is the Enea Bastianini of Formula 1, you’re right. This year, yes—so far, yes. Yes, because last year he was in a good team and struggled a bit with his teammate, just like Bastianini, because he also struggled with Russell. He changed teams and now he’s in serious trouble—I agree.
Enea Bastianini is a great racer, I’ve always liked him for that. He’s a fighter who comes alive at the end; he’s that kind of rider. But the lack of qualifying speed clouds everything for him, a bit like what’s happening to Lewis Hamilton.”
Davide Valsecchi also praised Charles Leclerc:
“Let’s give credit to Charles Leclerc. There was Sebastian Vettel—ba-da-bam. There’s Lewis Hamilton—ba-da-bam. I understand that Hamilton is in crisis, but if he is, it’s because Charles Leclerc put him there.” – concluded the Italian former racing driver and the 2012 GP2 Series champion.
