Former Formula 1 race winner David Coulthard has suggested that Lewis Hamilton experienced a level of sustained dominance in Formula 1 that very few drivers in history have ever been able to enjoy, describing it as a rare “luxury” within the sport.
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, remains one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport. The British driver secured his first title with McLaren in 2008 before going on to dominate the hybrid era with Mercedes, where he added six more championships to his record.
Following his high-profile switch to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 campaign, Lewis Hamilton has entered a new competitive phase of his career. While adapting to life in Maranello has presented challenges, the British driver has already shown signs of progress, including a podium finish at the Chinese Grand Prix where he secured third place for Ferrari.
Coulthard reflects on rare era of sustained dominance in Formula 1
Speaking on the “Up to Speed” podcast, the former F1 driver analysed Lewis Hamilton’s career trajectory and highlighted how uncommon it is for any driver to experience long-term periods of dominance at the highest level of Formula 1.
David Coulthard explained that past success does not guarantee future performance, noting that Formula 1 teams fighting for championships often extend their competitive cycles, which in turn allows successful teams with strong winning structures to begin development work earlier than their rivals.
The former Red Bull Racing driver suggested that this dynamic helps explain the strength of dominant operations such as Mercedes during their peak years, where continuity in engineering and championship-winning experience played a key role in maintaining competitiveness.
David Coulthard also pointed out that there are numerous examples in Formula 1 history where drivers who achieved world championship success later faced periods of reduced competitiveness due to shifts in team performance cycles.
He further noted that while some eras, such as Michael Schumacher’s time at Ferrari, broke certain patterns due to exceptional reliability and long-term stability, such sustained dominance remains extremely rare in modern Formula 1.
According to David Coulthard, only a very small group of drivers have managed to consistently operate at the front over multiple seasons, naming Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton as prime examples, while also acknowledging Max Verstappen’s recent run of success, which included four consecutive titles.
Lewis Hamilton continues to be an influential figure in Formula 1
Beyond his on-track achievements, Lewis Hamilton continues to be regarded as one of the most influential athletes in global sport, with his impact extending far beyond Formula 1.
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has previously spoken about Lewis Hamilton’s influence, describing him as one of the most inspiring figures in modern sport due to both his competitive success and his achievements outside of racing.
The Australian highlighted that Lewis Hamilton’s mindset, career longevity, and off-track presence make him a reference point for many current drivers, alongside other sporting icons such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
As the 2026 Formula 1 season develops, Lewis Hamilton will aim to build on his improving form with Ferrari, as the team continues to work on closing the gap to its main championship rivals.
The next major opportunity for further progress will come at the Miami Grand Prix, where Ferrari will look to strengthen its position in both the Drivers’ Championship with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, and the Constructors’ standings.
