The FIA has confirmed that the penalty received by Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz in the 2023 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit will be reviewed next week, on April 18, to decide if it will be confirmed or cancelled.
Scuderia Ferrari is trying to overturn the five-second time penalty that the Spaniard received as a result of the incident involving Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso at the second red flag restart in Melbourne. The Ferrari man crossed the finish line in fourth place, but due to the penalty he finished the Australian Grand Prix outside the top ten, therefore without scoring any points.
Team principal Frederic Vasseur announced they submitted its right of review a few days ago, pointing out to the various approaches from the stewards for other incidents, such as those between Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon or Sargeant/De Vries.
In a stewards decision document, the FIA announced: “The Stewards of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix have received a letter from Nikolas Tombazis, Single-seater Director of the FIA, attaching a petition by Competitor Scuderia Ferrari dated 6th April 2023 under Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code (“Petition”), seeking a review of the Stewards decision n°46 made within the framework of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix and requesting that the Stewards:

“consider such request and to make a determination whether or not a significant and relevant new element exists (Article 14.3 of the Code) in relation to the decision/incident”.
“The driver(s) and team representative(s) are required to report to the Stewards for a virtual hearing to be held on 18th April 2023 at 0800 CET in relation to the Petition.”
