Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s stunning pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix did more than just shake up the grid. It also reignited an intriguing debate surrounding Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s long-term prospects and whether the Monegasque driver is truly getting the opportunity to showcase the full extent of his talent.
Monaco was widely expected to be Ferrari’s weekend. The SF-26 arrived in the Principality carrying the label of favorite after displaying impressive low-speed performance, strong traction and encouraging pace throughout the opening rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Combined with Charles Leclerc’s exceptional record around his home circuit, many anticipated a serious challenge for pole position.
Instead, the spotlight ultimately belonged to Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The young Mercedes driver delivered another remarkable performance, securing his fourth pole position of the season with a sensational final lap. Alongside him on the front row will be Max Verstappen, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most fascinating Monaco Grand Prix starts in recent years.
Meanwhile, Ferrari was left reflecting on what might have been.
Lewis Hamilton secured third place on the grid after extracting the maximum from a difficult SF-26, while Charles Leclerc had to settle for fourth after a frustrating qualifying session that featured mistakes, ongoing technical concerns and contact with the barriers during his final attempt to challenge for pole.
Damon Hill wonders what Charles Leclerc could achieve elsewhere
Watching events unfold in Monaco prompted former Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill to raise an interesting question regarding Charles Leclerc’s career trajectory.
During BBC Radio 5 Live’s coverage of qualifying, Hill suggested that the Monaco weekend once again demonstrated how much performance Charles Leclerc is often forced to extract from machinery that may not always fully reflect his abilities.
The former world champion argued that Charles Leclerc consistently pushes Ferrari to its absolute limit and questioned what the eight-time Grand Prix winner might be capable of achieving if he found himself in a car offering a stronger overall package.
Hill’s comments came despite Ferrari recently securing the 28-year-old’s future with a contract extension announced shortly before his home Grand Prix. The new agreement is expected to keep the Monegasque driver in Maranello for many years to come.
Nevertheless, Hill’s observation touched on a topic that has followed Charles Leclerc throughout much of his Ferrari career: whether he has always had the machinery required to regularly fight for championships.
According to Hill’s assessment, Charles Leclerc once again appeared to be extracting every available fraction of performance from the SF-26 in Monaco. The British pundit suggested that the Ferrari driver ultimately exceeded the limit because he had little choice but to take risks if he wanted to remain in the fight for pole position.
In Hill’s view, Charles Leclerc had reached the point where caution was no longer an option. With rivals continuing to improve and the opportunity of a home pole position slipping away, the Ferrari driver committed fully to the final attempt and paid the price.
Karun Chandhok sees a missed opportunity for Ferrari
Former Formula 1 driver and respected analyst Karun Chandhok also reflected on Charles Leclerc’s difficult qualifying session, although his focus was directed more toward the mistakes that ultimately defined the afternoon.
Like many observers, Karun Chandhok was highly impressed by the performances delivered by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen during the decisive moments of Q3. Both drivers produced exceptional laps under enormous pressure, setting a benchmark that proved difficult to match.
However, Karun Chandhok felt that Charles Leclerc had allowed a significant opportunity to slip away.
The former driver praised the quality of driving displayed by the front-row contenders but argued that the Ferrari driver would likely leave qualifying wondering what might have happened without the costly errors that interrupted his challenge.
From Chandhok’s perspective, Monaco represented one of Charles Leclerc’s best opportunities this season to secure pole position. Ferrari had shown genuine pace throughout practice, and the unique characteristics of the circuit appeared well suited to the strengths of both the SF-26 and its home hero.
Instead, a combination of mistakes, braking concerns and confidence issues left the Monegasque watching from the second row while Andrea Kimi Antonelli celebrated another career-defining achievement.
Questions remain despite Ferrari commitment
The irony of the situation is difficult to ignore. Just days after Ferrari reaffirmed its commitment to Charles Leclerc through a new contract extension, Monaco delivered another reminder of the challenges both driver and team continue to face.
There is little doubt regarding Charles Leclerc’s speed. His performances around Monaco over the years have repeatedly demonstrated his ability to compete with the very best drivers in Formula 1. Yet weekends like this continue to fuel debate about whether Ferrari can consistently provide him with the tools required to convert that talent into championships.
For now, Charles Leclerc remains fully committed to the Scuderia and focused on Sunday’s race. With Lewis Hamilton starting third and Charles Leclerc fourth, Ferrari still has an opportunity to fight back through strategy and its traditionally strong launches off the line.
However, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s pole position and the comments from respected figures like Damon Hill and Karun Chandhok have ensured that the conversation surrounding Charles Leclerc’s future, Ferrari’s competitiveness and what might have been will continue long after Monaco qualifying comes to an end.
