Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 World Champion, recently made a bold statement about Lewis Hamilton, suggesting that the British driver’s era in F1 could be approaching its conclusion. Making such a claim while Hamilton is still actively competing is a significant stance. However, Hill doesn’t rely on generalizations alone—he cites four specific drivers to support his argument.
The 2025 F1 season has revealed some clear trends across the grid, which Damon Hill believes are impossible to ignore. According to the former World Champion, these trends highlight the changing dynamics in the sport and Hamilton’s evolving position within it.
Hill: “Verstappen like Schumacher. And then Alonso…”
First, Damon Hill gives credit where it’s due: “Lando Norris has managed to win the title, and Oscar Piastri definitely has everything it takes to become a World Champion,” he stated on the ‘Drive to Wynn’ podcast, as reported by GPBlog.com.
He continued: “There are many other drivers who have what it takes to be champions and who will eventually become one.” He then poses a question: “How long can Hamilton continue to resist?”
Damon Hill answers with some expected observations and some that might surprise: “Verstappen is currently considered, probably, on the same level as Michael Schumacher—the nearly unbeatable driver. Then there’s Alonso. Fernando continues to give his all, surpassing the limitations of age.”
While several drivers are capable of competing for the championship, Damon Hill emphasizes that none currently match Max Verstappen’s level: “He is incredibly precise, perfect down to the millimeter. His vision is extraordinary, especially considering the time he spends in front of the simulator and the computer.” Referring to Verstappen’s dedication to simulator hours and data analysis, Hill adds, “He is only 28 years old, and his peak period is yet to come—he’s practically entering it now.”
As the grid prepares for the transformative 2026 regulations, debates like Damon Hill’s underscore the sport’s unforgiving nature. Legends earn their status through sustained excellence, but the clock ticks for everyone. Hamilton’s response in the new era will determine whether he extends his remarkable legacy or gracefully cedes center stage to the next wave.
