Charles Leclerc’s commanding victory at the British Grand Prix may prove to be one of the most significant moments of Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 campaign. After several weekends in which Lewis Hamilton often appeared to have the upper hand inside the Scuderia garage, the Monegasque delivered an emphatic response by taking victory at Silverstone and re-establishing himself as a genuine championship contender.
Former Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill believes the timing of the result could hardly have been better. In his view, Charles Leclerc had been under increasing pressure after seeing Lewis Hamilton adapt quickly to life at Ferrari, making the Silverstone success an important boost both competitively and psychologically.
Damon Hill believes Lewis Hamilton’s early Ferrari form increased the pressure
Discussing Ferrari’s internal battle during an appearance on the BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, Damon Hill suggested that Charles Leclerc faced a particularly difficult challenge. After spending years as Ferrari’s reference driver, Charles Leclerc suddenly found himself measured against one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.
According to Damon Hill, being outperformed by Lewis Hamilton—despite the Briton’s vast experience and the fact that he joined the team only recently—would inevitably have created frustration. The 1996 World Champion argued that such situations can affect any driver’s confidence, especially when expectations are as high as they are at Ferrari.
However, Damon Hill also praised the 28-year-old for refusing to accept the situation. Instead of becoming discouraged, the Ferrari driver immersed himself in analysing data, working closely with his engineers and searching for solutions that would allow him to reconnect with the SF-26.
Charles Leclerc found answers through setup changes
The breakthrough eventually arrived at Silverstone. Following a difficult Sprint weekend, Charles Leclerc introduced a series of setup changes that better suited his natural driving style. Ferrari’s revised direction transformed the balance of the SF-26, allowing the Monegasque to rediscover the confidence that had been missing during previous races.
Damon Hill pointed to the enormous amount of data available in modern Formula 1, explaining that even the smallest technical adjustments can completely change a driver’s feeling behind the wheel. In his assessment, the Monegasque’s progress demonstrated how marginal gains can produce dramatic improvements when a driver finally finds the right balance.
The result spoke for itself. Charles Leclerc was not only quicker than Lewis Hamilton throughout Sunday’s Grand Prix, but also appeared to have the strongest overall pace in the field as Ferrari secured one of its most convincing victories of the season.
Silverstone victory surprised many observers
Damon Hill admitted that few people would have predicted Charles Leclerc standing on the top step of the podium before the weekend began. Ferrari had not been considered the favourite at Silverstone, with many expecting Mercedes to dominate on a circuit that seemed better suited to the characteristics of the W17.
Instead, Ferrari exceeded expectations. Through a combination of setup improvements, efficient tyre management and excellent race pace, Charles Leclerc completely changed the narrative of his season in the space of a single weekend.
Could this be Ferrari’s turning point?
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Silverstone is not simply that Charles Leclerc won, but how convincingly he achieved the result. After struggling to match Lewis Hamilton during several earlier rounds, the Monegasque emerged as Ferrari’s benchmark throughout Sunday’s race, demonstrating superior pace over both his teammate and many of the team’s direct rivals.
With Ferrari continuing to develop the SF-26 through further aerodynamic upgrades and the anticipated ADUO 2 power unit package later this season, Silverstone could represent much more than a single Grand Prix victory. If Charles Leclerc has truly found a setup philosophy that complements his driving style, Damon Hill believes the British Grand Prix may ultimately be remembered as the weekend that reignited Ferrari’s championship ambitions and restored Charles Leclerc’s confidence at exactly the right moment.
