Max Verstappen remains the biggest factor in Formula 1’s driver market
Whenever discussions turn to the future of the Formula 1 driver market, one name inevitably dominates the conversation: Max Verstappen. According to respected Italian journalist Pino Allievi, the reigning world champion has become the single most influential figure capable of reshaping the plans of every leading team on the grid.
With speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future continuing to intensify, uncertainty has spread throughout the paddock. Every possible scenario involving the Dutch driver has the potential to trigger a domino effect, forcing Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull to reconsider their long-term strategies.
Although Red Bull remains under contract with Max Verstappen, the atmosphere surrounding the Milton Keynes-based outfit has become increasingly complicated. Questions over the team’s competitive direction, combined with internal restructuring and persistent rumours surrounding the driver’s future, have only fuelled suggestions that one of Formula 1’s biggest transfer stories could eventually become reality.
Pino Allievi believes every top Formula 1 team must consider Max Verstappen
Speaking about the current situation, Pino Allievi argued that Max Verstappen has effectively become the “game-changing” figure in the Formula 1 driver market because every front-running team would have to evaluate the opportunity to sign him if he became available.
According to the veteran journalist, Red Bull faces uncertainty because it is no longer entirely clear whether Max Verstappen sees his long-term future with the team. McLaren may already have its driver plans largely settled, but Pino Allievi suggested that any team would naturally reconsider its position if a driver of Max Verstappen’s calibre unexpectedly entered the market.
Ferrari was also included in that discussion. While the Maranello team currently boasts one of the strongest driver pairings in Formula 1 with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Pino Allievi believes that any team principal has a responsibility to at least evaluate the possibility of signing the four-time world champion if circumstances were to change.
Ferrari could eventually become an attractive destination for Max Verstappen
Looking further ahead, Pino Allievi suggested that Ferrari might actually represent one of the most appealing destinations for Max Verstappen later in his career.
Rather than focusing exclusively on Formula 1, the journalist pointed out that Ferrari offers opportunities unavailable elsewhere. Beyond Grand Prix racing, the Italian manufacturer has a growing presence in endurance competition through the FIA World Endurance Championship, while also supporting customer racing programmes that could allow Max Verstappen to pursue his well-known passion for competing in multiple disciplines.
Pino Allievi argued that this broader racing philosophy could align perfectly with Max Verstappen’s ambitions. In his view, Ferrari could offer the Dutch driver the flexibility to explore projects like endurance racing and potentially compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans without leaving the Ferrari family.
At the same time, however, the veteran journalist acknowledged that such a move would make little sense in the immediate future. Charles Leclerc recently committed his long-term future to Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton has continued to demonstrate impressive performances since joining the Scuderia. As a result, Pino Allievi indicated that any approach would only become realistic several years down the road, mentioning 2028 as a more plausible timeframe for Ferrari to consider.
Mercedes also remains firmly in the conversation
While Ferrari continues to generate headlines whenever Max Verstappen’s future is discussed, Mercedes cannot be overlooked.
Toto Wolff has never hidden his admiration for the Dutch champion, and despite Mercedes placing considerable faith in the development of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, speculation surrounding a possible move has never completely disappeared.
Pino Allievi observed that Formula 1 contracts have repeatedly proved to be less definitive than they appear on paper. Throughout the sport’s history, agreements have frequently been renegotiated or terminated whenever an exceptional opportunity emerged.
From his perspective, team principals cannot afford to ignore the chance to recruit what many consider to be the best driver in Formula 1. He suggested that executives like Toto Wolff, Frédéric Vasseur and Zak Brown all have an obligation to evaluate the strongest possible lineup, regardless of the contractual situations of their existing drivers.
Formula 1 history shows elite teams always pursue the very best talent
To reinforce his argument, Pino Allievi drew comparisons with several iconic moments in Formula 1 history. He recalled how Enzo Ferrari consistently sought to field the strongest available drivers, even when that created fierce rivalries inside the team. Similar philosophies, he noted, were later adopted by figures like Ron Dennis and Frank Williams, both of whom were prepared to manage highly competitive pairings in pursuit of success.
In Pino Allievi’s opinion, this approach remains just as relevant in modern Formula 1. Regardless of existing contracts or internal dynamics, championship-winning organisations should always remain open to signing an exceptional talent whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Whether Max Verstappen ultimately remains with Red Bull or eventually embarks on a new chapter elsewhere, his next career decision is widely expected to shape the Formula 1 driver market for years to come. Until that uncertainty is resolved, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and the rest of the paddock are likely to continue monitoring developments closely, fully aware that one move could completely transform the competitive landscape of Formula 1.
