Lewis Hamilton could leave Ferrari by the end of 2026, with the team preparing a replacement
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton might part ways with Ferrari at the conclusion of the 2026 season if the team’s results fail to meet expectations. In Maranello, preparations are reportedly underway to bring in a familiar face as a potential successor.
The British driver has faced a challenging first season with Ferrari. More than halfway through the 2025 campaign, Lewis Hamilton has yet to secure a podium in a full-length Grand Prix. His only standout moment came in China, where he achieved pole in qualifying and took victory in the Sprint Race. Recent performances suggest Hamilton is beginning to find his rhythm, and the gap to teammate Charles Leclerc has narrowed. However, overall, the SF-25 has struggled. Ferrari’s evolved rear suspension provided only a minor improvement of 0.04 seconds, highlighting the car’s limitations.
Despite these small gains, Lewis Hamilton could still decide to leave Maranello by the end of 2026. The reasons behind such a move, as well as who might step into his seat, are already the subject of speculation within Formula 1 circles.
A secure option for Ferrari if Hamilton departs
According to reports from Italian journalist Paolo Ciccarone on RMC Motori, 2026 could mark Hamilton’s final season with Ferrari. The seven-time world champion will be expected to justify the significant investment the team has made in him. If the car performs at the expected level, the Briton could pursue an eighth world title and potentially retire afterward. Conversely, if the SF-26 fails to deliver the required performance, Hamilton might decide to end his time with the Scuderia. Combined with the possibility of Charles Leclerc leaving, Ferrari could face a near-complete overhaul of its driver lineup. In our view, it remains unlikely that Hamilton would leave Maranello before the end of 2027.
In Leclerc’s potential absence, Oscar Piastri is the main candidate being considered. In Hamilton’s case, however, Ferrari reportedly already has a reliable alternative ready: Carlos Sainz. The Spanish driver spent four years at Maranello and is familiar with the team environment, where he remains highly respected. Sainz has maintained a positive relationship with Ferrari following his departure, avoiding any negative comments that could jeopardize a potential return. Choosing Sainz would therefore be a wise decision for the team, prioritizing continuity, experience, and stability.
For now, this remains speculative market talk, but in Formula 1, keeping a close eye on driver movements is always essential. Ferrari appears prepared to act quickly if Hamilton does decide to depart, with Carlos Sainz positioned as a strong and ready replacement to maintain the Scuderia’s competitiveness on the grid.
