Charles Leclerc: “When I start thinking about danger, I will retire from F1”. Interview with Charles .

During an event organized by Bitdefender in Maranello (a leading cybersecurity company), Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc spoke at length, covering various topics. The Monegasque driver first addressed the postponement of the Imola Grand Prix due to the severe weather conditions affecting the Emilia Romagna region. He then discussed the Maranello team’s recent results and provided insights into the team’s work behind the scenes. Below is an excerpt of his comments as reported by the online edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Charles Leclerc’s words:

“The safety of everyone is the priority. I believe it was the right decision, even though it was our home race. The images of the past few days are emblematic,” Charles Leclerc began, referring to the cancellation of the sixth round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship which was scheduled to take place this weekend at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola.

In recent times, the Monegasque driver has been driving in a very aggressive manner (essentially pushing the single-seater limits) to compensate for the lack of competitiveness of the SF-23 designed in Maranello for the 2023 Formula 1 campaign. As a result, he has made a few more mistakes, sometimes crashing into the barriers. Speaking about safety on the track, Charles emphasized: “We have various systems to race safely. That’s why I only focus on speed and pushing the car to its limits. And sometimes, crashing happens. When I start thinking about the danger, I think I will retire.”

The Ferrari man continued: “On the track, you only see the result, but there is a lot of work behind it that people often don’t realize. Trust is everything, from the car to the mechanics to the engineers. It has to be that way when you’re reaching speeds of 250 km/h. Everything has to be perfect. Trust needs to be present in every aspect.” – Charles Leclerc pointed out.

Being a Scuderia Ferrari driver is often very challenging in terms of expectations. “Pressure? I have a lot of it. Especially since I joined this team,” Charles Leclerc confirmed. “It requires a lot of passion and responsibility. Even with the smallest mistake, many people are disappointed. But I’ve always dreamt of driving in Formula 1 and for Ferrari. So, I can understand these responsibilities.” He then stated that “we have to be prepared for this. In our sport, pressure is normal: we fight and compete, even when things don’t go as expected.”

Finally, the Ferrari driver explained how he often manages to make a difference: “It’s a combination of work, preparation, and risk. It happens especially when I do a qualifying lap; I have to understand the limits of the car, tires, and track. That’s where everything comes together. Hard work and consistency should never be lacking, even when things don’t go the right way.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
